Living Treasure Award: Dr. Richard Wilbur

PBKACA is honoring our own Richard S. Wilbur, M.D., J.D., as a Living Treasure. Dick has been a PBKACA board member for many years, most recently as treasurer and college relations liaison.

His career includes:
— Active duty in the U.S. Navy
— Chief medical staff, Palo Alto-Stanford Hospital
— Chairman of the Board, California Blue Shield
— President, American College of Physician Executives
— President and Chief Executive Officer, Medic Alert Foundation
— Assistant Secretary of Defense under President Richard Nixon
— Senior Vice President, Baxter Laboratories
— President and CEO, Apt Management, Inc.

Currently, Dick is chairman of the Judicial Council of the American College of Legal Medicine, chairman of the American Medical Foundation for Peer Review and Education, and member of the Finance Committee of World Association of Medical Law and editor of their Newsbulletin.

Dick will be interviewed by Randi Belisomo, PBKACA board member and WGN news reporter, on such topics as his career including medicine to politics to law; the pros and cons of retirement; his thoughts on liberal arts education and his PBK family (including his wife and son); Medicare vs. Obamacare, focusing on his work with LBJ and his views on Obama as a politician; his thoughts on intra-party cooperation and Congress from his work with Wilbur Mills; his “experience” with drugs from his time serving in Vietnam; and his views on physicians in the military and civil disobedience from his time at the Pentagon.

Dick graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University in 1943, M.D. from Stanford Medical School in 1946, and J.D. from John Marshall Law School in 1990.
